Warehouse open, but more to come The Warehouse’s latest store has only just opened on Queen Street in Richmond and four new businesses are already waiting to move onto the site when the next stage of the development is completed. Nelson MP Nick Smith cut the ribbon at last Thursday’s official opening of The Warehouse on the former Placemakers site adjacent to the Richmond Mall. Although it signalled the completion of one project that store manager Geoff Bostock says “has been a long time coming”, it marked the start of another for the crew from Gibbons
Construction. Gibbons Construction is moving straight from The Warehouse onto two new premises on the site that will be home to four businesses. National retailers Tango’s Shoes and Bed Bath & Beyond will be moving into a new building to be completed next to the Richmond Police Station by the end of February. Law firm McFadden McMeeken Phillips and Nelson Radiology are moving into offices on the second floor of The Warehouse complex when they are completed
next month. Nelson Radiology’s Richmond branch is moving from temporary premises on Talbot Street, after being flooded out of their building on the corner of Queen Street and Gladstone Road last year. Nelson law firm McFadden McMeeken Phillips is moving its Richmond offices from Florence Street. Gibbons Construction had earlier completed the KMart building on the site and managing director of Gibbons Construction, Scott Gibbons, says there continues to be a big demand for retail and business
premises in Richmond. The KMart complex also houses Couplands Bakery, Benge and Co, Aki Sushi and Columbus Coffee. “Richmond is really going ahead,” Scott says. “We keep building these places and people keep coming here - the momentum is creating more momentum.” However, Scott admits that their latest project provided a big challenge, after wet weather in April delayed key stages by almost a month.

More awards for local heroes The four men who saved two lives from a sinking car last winter have been recognised by Nelson City Council for their efforts. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese presented the Royal Humane Society Awards for Bravery to local men Kyle Paki Paki and Philip Walker, and honoured Atawhai man Gary Miller and British tourist Adam Black, in a special ceremony held in the Council Chamber on Monday. The awards are in recognition of the men’s actions on July 13, last year which lead to the successful rescue of Filemoni Fa’avae and Ali Fa’avae from their vehicle, after it crashed into Saltwater Creek. The men also pulled driver Janice Fa’avae from the submerged vehicle though, sadly, she did not survive the incident despite their best efforts. Rachel presented Kyle and Philip with the Royal Humane Society’s Bronze Medal. Gary and Adam were unable to attend the ceremony, but have been awarded the Royal Humane Society’s Certificate of Merit. Rachel offered her heartfelt thanks to the men and says it

Richmond funeral home to expand

Waimea Richmond Funeral Services is selling part of its land on the corner of Salisbury and Champion roads and is planning to redevelop its funeral home on the 1.9 hectare property. The property is owned by the well-known Day family which also operates the monumental masons, G Miller and Sons, on the site, as well as funeral services in Nelson and Motueka and a crematorium in Hope. Although Francis Day says he can’t reveal who is buying the land, because of a confidentially clause, he did say that “we have been negotiating for quite some time” and that the sale was imminent. “We are selling some of the

land but we are not leaving the site. We will be retaining a substantial part of it and building a modern, new funeral home there,” he says. Francis says Richmond is growing rapidly and the existing funeral home is not large enough to offer a full service for the population. The redeveloped funeral home would complement its services at Marsden House in Nelson and Golden Bay Motueka Funeral Services in Motueka. “We originally brought the property when it was a deer farm and all the surrounding
land was rural. We wanted to develop a crematorium but that wasn’t possible so we opened one at the Gardens of the World at Hope. “We’ve had a lot of interest in the land over the years. People have wanted to buy it for subdividing for housing or motels and we were approached about building a boarding house for the school but we wanted to stay here.” G Miller and Sons will also be staying on the site, although they will be relocating the manufacturing side of their business to another site. Francis expects that they will complete plans for development of the property by the end of the year.

Kiwis love to visit Nelson Nelson has been ranked as the third most popular holiday spot for Kiwis, shows a survey by travel website Wotif. The survey was released last week and shows Queenstown as the most popular domestic holiday venue, followed by Wellington, Nelson, Wanaka and Auckland. The same survey showed the beach ranked highest when it came to New Zealander’s favourite place to holiday, which may explain Nelson’s high ranking. Thirty one per
cent of the survey’s 1531 respondents said they like to spend their holiday relaxing. The survey’s release is the second piece of good news for the region’s tourism industry, with Nelson City Council last week announcing it was taking full ownership of Nelson Tasman Tourism. It comes after former half-owner Tasman District Council decided to drop its funding of the tourism marketing and promotions group. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says

WAKEFIELD HALL FAILS QUAKE TEST: Seismic evaluation of the Wakefield Hall, using X-ray technology, has shown that the reinforcing in the hall’s concrete block walls and parts of the roof do not meet earthquake standards. The Tasman District Council had already reported a seismic rating of less than the required 34 per cent of new building standards for the Wakefield Hall and the X-ray scanning did not result in any change to that rating. Council will be discussing the future of the district’s earthquake-prone buildings at a workshop later this year. BIG BEACH CLEAN UP: The Big Beach Clean-up is on again this year, scheduled for November 1 when volunteers will give Tasman Bay’s coastline a spring clean. The coastline from Marahau to Cable Bay will be divided up into sections and groups will be assigned to collect rubbish from those areas. Volunteers collected 3.5 tonne of rubbish in last year’s Big Beach Clean-up. To register, go online to doc.govt.nz and click on “getting involved”. SECOND HAND SUNDAY: Registrations are open for the second edition of Second Hand Sunday, to be held on September 28 from 10am to 1pm. Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council trialled the event in June, as a practical way for people to pass on items that would otherwise end up going to landfill. More than 145 households took part and 93 per cent of respondents in a post-event survey said they would happily do it again. People taking part in Second Hand Sunday simply leave unwanted items on their driveway for others to collect and take away. Register online at tasman.govt.nz using search phrase Second Hand Sunday.

Hip hop shakedown coming to Richmond Nine crews from Richmond hip hop dance studio Mad Beat will need to be in sync for this year’s Shakedown competition, to be held in the Waimea College Hall this Saturday. All crews are judged on creativity, choreography, spacing, timing, use of music, performance and interaction with the crowd. Gemma says this year’s event will have three highly experienced judges, Dujon Cullingford of Hamilton and Daphne Seyb and Patrick Godinet of Wellington. Daphne has competed internationally, and trained as a judge with Street Dance NZ, while Patrick has judged in Brisbane at House of Champions and is an internationally recognised choreographer. Tickets cost $10 for school-aged children and $15 for adults, with a family of four costing $40. There will be limited door sales from 6pm with the event starting at 6.30pm.

The annual fundraising event was supported by a very generous public when it hit the streets on Friday, August 29. Although an exact amount hasn’t been tallied yet, it is looking like the Cancer Society will make a similar amount to last year, just under $100,000. Richmond Mall Pines Volleyball Team – Wednesday August 27: The Richmond Pines volleyball team has won their third consecutive national title, after competing in the Volleyball New Zealand Club Championships in Tauranga. The team played North Harbour in the final and won 3-1, while Mt Maunganui came third and an Auckland team completed the top four. Patrick Shone earned himself best setter in the all star six, while Ben Glue was best spiker and local player Teryn Proracki played an outstanding final, despite a severe stomach bug.

The friendships and camaraderie between special education students from Richmond and Christchurch continued last week when they got together in Nelson for their annual inter-school basketball tournament. Forty-three students from Waimea College, Salisbury School, Papanui High and Allenvale School, took part in the three-day exchange which centred around a basketball tournament at Saxton Stadium. The students also enjoyed a trip to the movies, dinner at the Lone Star, games at the Motueka Recreation Centre, indoor bowls at Club Waimea, and a barbecue and swim at the ASB Aquatic Centre. But the best part of the exchange, according to Waimea College special education teacher Ed Book, always happens off the court where students form life-long friendships.

“There’s so much camaraderie between the students and they form so many new friendships,” Ed says. “They always get along so well together.” Ed says the exchange started in 2010, after a group of teachers got together at the special education national summer games in Palmerston North in 2009. “The students got so much out of the games we talked about how we could keep things going. We decided we could get a school exchange going, so the next year three schools came to Nelson.” Ed says Salisbury School sports coordinator Wayne Bowen did a great job of organising the tournament and activities, and arranging sponsors. Blokes open up their magnificent sheds Blokes’ sheds are a place of wonder and intrigue but this month they’ll be a place for exploring. The Life Education Trust’s Blokes in Sheds tour is being held again on September 21, and will give locals the chance to peer into some classic kiwi sheds. One of the sheds that will form part of the tour is Roger and Dave Humphries’, which includes a range of vehicles from Model A Fords to Indian motorcycles, and even army vehicles. In recent years as Roger neared retirement, the Humphries Brothers decided to build a purpose-built shed to store their collection, and give them both somewhere to go and work on their restoration projects. Both Roger and Dave are always on the lookout for something new and different, and are fortunate enough to have the vision and skills to take some thing that looks well beyond repair and turn it into something special. Their passion for many things auto-
motive is obvious when you engage them in conversations around their shed and what’s in it. Roger is particularly interested in Model T and Model A Fords from the early 1920s, whilst Dave’s passion is centred around Indian Motorcycles and Mopar Muscle Cars. It’s not often you go on a vacation to Brisbane and decide to buy a 1940s World War II Bren Gun Carrier, or take your favourite Indian on the annual Indian Motorcycle pilgrimage, yet Roger and Dave think nothing of it. Roger is currently working on the restoration of a 1918 Dodge car whilst Dave is tinkering away on two early 1920s Indians, and they are both keen to see a good turnout for the Tour to share their toys with the community. Fly fishing film hits town The world’s most extensive fishing film festival, RISE, will screen in Nelson next week. For nine years, RISE has screened exclusive content from the world’s best fly fishing filmmakers, that allows the fishing community to share their passion for the sport and create public awareness of fly fishing’s new and vibrant emergence. For many, RISE Fly Fishing Film Festival has become so much more than just going to the cinema. These annual fish-fests have become a true celebration of fly fishing, and cinema audiences will be gripped by the feature film which follows six fly fishermen from different places and walks of life as they each explore a treasured corner of the North Island. The Rotary Club of Richmond needs a place to store its Salvation Army emergency mobile kitchen and it also wants more people to use the facility. Rotary donated the self-contained trailer unit to the Salvation Army in 1999 to provide mobile cooking facilities for emergency services. The trailer is fitted with its own gas, power and water supply and cooking facilities, so that it can be quickly mobilised to feed people involved in civil emergencies. However, Rotary’s Pete Glue says the facility has been under-utilised and they want to promote the fact that is available for any emergency services or related groups. He says they took it to the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade and Nelson-

St Paul’s gets right behind Daffodil Day St Paul’s School’s uniform colour changed from maroon and navy blue to mellow yellow last Friday, with the student council organising a Daffodil Day-themed mufti-day to raise money for the Cancer Society. Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s biggest annual appeal and St Paul’s has always organised fundraising activities to support the charity. This year, the teachers left it up to the school student councillors who organised a mufti-day with a difference, with students wearing yellow and donating a gold coin to raise just over $200 for the Cancer Society’s Nelson Centre. “We organised a mufti-day but everyone had to wear something yellow or be dressed all in yellow,” student councillor Liam Nalder says. “Daf-
fodil Day is a great cause because it helps so many people out - my great auntie died of cancer a while ago and it was really sad.” Student councillor Zara Harris says the school also participated in some Daffodil Day-themed activities as part of the mufti-day, including making yellow necklaces, windmills and flowers. “Cancer is a thing that people live with every day so it’s a really good charity to support,” she says. Cancer Society Nelson Centre manager Linda Lucre, says the Daffodil Appeal “went well and the public were very generous”. She says they haven’t got a final figure for the Nelson-Tasman region yet although it looks as though the appeal raised a similar amount to last year’s total of just under $100,000.

The Gibbons Construction logo has been a prominent image on the streets of Richmond lately with several high profile projects being constructed and completed in the last few months. They also have a heavy influence in the Nelson area. But construction is only one side of this many- faceted company. There have been a great many foundations laid since they came into being and the projects they have completed have brought about the development, not just of their company, but of the region itself. The late Bill Gibbons began the Gibbons Holdings story with the production of kilns for the tobacco industry, and it wasn’t until 1950 that Bill founded the construction company and began contracting around the region. Collingwood Street Medical Centre The centre is a 3300 square metre multi-storey medical facility which had to include fit out work for Radiology and Orthopaedic tenants. This meant Gibbons was required to work in and around some very highly technical and sensitive equipment. The construction team also had to react to significant structural changes to the build following the Christchurch earthquakes in 2011.

The adjoining Fitness Centre was officially opened in June 2011 and is another reason why the ASB Aquatic and Fit-
ness Centre is such a great asset for the community. The centre offers Les Mills group fitness classes, fitness assessments and personalised programmes to help you burn some calories, gain some muscle and get the lifestyle and look you want. It’s fitted out with state of the art gym equipment along with some great staff. The fact they have won fitness centre of the year just proves they’re the team to call on when you want results. The fitness centre are also experienced in dealing with the rehabilitation of people after injuries, health related issues and have worked with some of the region’s elite level athletes.
Their learn to swim pool was the first addition after their opening and is a custom built pool that changes depth width withe, allowing the children to do their thing from the safety of shallower water while others can swim full lengths on the other side. There aren’t many pools like it in the country and the aquatic centre are proud to be part of the first steps for many people as they learn to swim; not just children, but any age who are willing to learn. Alongside the Swim Magic learn to swim lessons, the aquatic centre also cater to the more serious swimmer, with adult swimming squads that focus on technique and

Country Fair It doesn’t get much better than a family day out in the first weekend of spring. Activities galore for the children, scrummy food and real coffee for Mum and Dad, entertainment with haybale seating and lots of competitions, raffles and auctions to pin your luck on.

Before heading home, fair visitors should stock up their gardens and pantries from the popular farmer’s market and plant stalls. The latter will have its usual extensive array of seedlings, plants, shrubs, citrus varieties and herbs. These have been lovingly nurtured for the past few months by the dedicated plant people, so are healthy and ready for a new home.
The farmer’s market stocks fresh veggies and produce from generous local suppliers. Most of these are freshly picked on the morning of the fair. Hen houses and orchards are raided too, to provide free-range eggs, citrus and home-grown nuts. The farmer’s market also stocks home-made jams, chutneys, lemon honey and mountains of delicious home baking. For the chefs amongst you, there are a number of baking competitions held on the day. Kids should be rolling truffles, Mums and Dads submitting their best cake or slice, and Nana and Pop baking off for the grandparents’ trophy! All entries need to be dropped into the school library early on Friday 5th September. Start time for the fair is 11am and it proceeds whatever the weather. Parking is provided in neighbouring paddocks, but it does fill quickly so don’t be late! Please follow the instructions of the friendly parking wardens.

Last Friday a number of Nelson Bays Police received awards at a ceremony at the Police Station. While many of those awards were acknowledging dedicated service over a significant number of years, some staff also received special awards for outstanding service. Our Youth Aid Sergeant Karl Parfitt (or Charlie as most people know him) received an Area Commander’s Award for the work he has done to help young people in Nelson Bays and in particular his work with the CACTUS programme. This is a programme that runs outside of work hours and involves a number of staff on each course mentoring a group of teenagers on a fitness training programme. Three mornings a week they meet at 6am and go through a rigorous physical training programme. Once the work is done the officers and helpers cook the kids a hearty breakfast and they go off to school for the day. The work Charlie does here goes well beyond the call of duty, but it also makes a significant difference to the lives of the young people. Detective Ruth Collins received an Area Commander’s Commendation for her work on the homicide investigation into the death of Richmond’s Sharyn Wilkinson-Foley. Constable James Matthews received the District Commander’s Certificate of Appreciation for the part he played in the Wairarapa Ballooning tragedy. Constable Matthews was working for Police in the Wairarapa at the time. Constable Mike McDougall of Murchison received a District Commander’s Commendation for his quick thinking actions to save the driver of a logging truck which crashed into the Buller River in May. Senior Sergeant David Gibson received the District Commander’s Commendation for the work he did recovering bodies from the CTV building after the February 2011 Canterbury earthquake. Senior Sergeant Gibson was part of a team from Nelson Bays who worked throughout the night recovering survivors and the bodies of the deceased. This week I have also had the privilege of attending the presentation of Royal Humane Society of New Zealand bravery awards to the men involved in rescuing people from a crashed car. Kyle Paki Paki and Philip Walker received Bronze Medals at the ceremony for their part in pulling Filemoni Fa’avae and Ali Fa’avae from the submerged vehicle, along with the body of Janice Fa’avae. When I reflect on what all of these people have done I genuinely feel proud of this community. Some of those named above are trained professionals going about their work, but others are members of the public who happened to be on the spot. No matter who they are, these people all did the right thing at the right time to help another person and they are all heroes in my mind.

Fundraiser for baby Adelaide The Wakefield School PTA and Focus Wakefield are holding a fundraising evening to help pay for the treatment of 18-month-old Wakefield cancer-sufferer, Adelaide Ketel. The event will feature live music, drinks, supper and raffles and all the proceeds will go directly to help fund the Wakefield toddler’s treatment. Adelaide was born on Valentine’s Day last year and became ill in January this year - she was flown to Christchurch Hospital by air ambulance in March when a CT scan and X-rays revealed a shadow on one of her lungs. Garin College swimmer Thomas Heaton will benefit from some leading edge tuition and get the chance to see the world’s fastest swimmers in action, at an elite youth coaching programme in Qatar later this year. Thomas, 15, is one of two swimmers selected to represent New Zealand at the International Federation of Swimming Associations (FINA) Youth Programme in Doha, from December 3 to 7. One male and one female swimmer, aged 14 to 16, from each FINA country will attend the programme which is designed to inspire talented young swimmers and expose them to the latest training techniques - about 350 swimmers are expected to attend. “I’m really excited about it,” Thomas says. “It will be great fun and it would be great to see some world record swims go down. “I’m also looking forward to seeing what other coaching ideas and philosophies are out there. It will be all the latest stuff.” Thomas was selected for the programme after gaining the highest FINA points for males in his age group at the national age group competition, held in April and May. He won the 1500 metre freestyle, finished second

Tasman Magic Academy coach Andy Adair says it will be a great opportunity for Thomas who has trained hard all season. Andy says Thomas moved from Dunedin to Nelson to further his swimming career and his selection is recognition of his commitment and hard work. “It is very exciting that Swim New Zealand can now offer
this all-expenses-paid international training camp as part of its development pathway for our young swimmers,” Andy says. Thomas will need to pay for his New Zealand uniform, travel insurance and have spending money but otherwise everything is paid for including attendance at the FINA world championships finals. “The Tasman Swim Club are thrilled that Thomas has been given this tremendous honour to share with other top swim-
mers from around the world. Undoubtedly, this will inspire other swimmers from the club and region as they learn and hear about this incredible opportunity,” Andy says. But this week, Thomas and his Tasman clubmates were focused on the national short course champs in Wellington. Thomas was competing in all the freestyle distances including his specialist 400 metre and 1500 metre as well as the 400 metre individual medley.

Golden Downs wins Sloan golf trophy The smallest golf club in the Nelson-Tasman region, Golden Downs, showed it is also one of the best, winning the annual Sloan Trophy competition for just the second time in the competition’s 49 years history. Golden Downs qualified top of the eight-game round-robin phase of the annual men’s teams competition, before beating Greenacres 6-0 in the semifinal and defending champions Motueka 4-2 in the final played at Golden Downs on August 24. It was a remarkable result for Golden Downs which required almost half of its members to play for the club during the six month Sloan Trophy campaign.
“We were absolutely over the moon to win,” club president and Sloan Trophy team member Trevor Timpson says. “We only have 28 members and only 20 males and we sometimes struggled to produce the required six players for the Sloan Trophy games. Trevor teamed-up with his brother Kevin Timpson and Gary Oldham, Quentin Newport, Frank Ladds and Cody Brown in the finals, while Preston Shaw, Reg Slade and Ray Riordan had also played in earlier rounds. Trevor says the team has a wide range of ages, experience and handicaps with almost 60 years difference between the oldest, Frank at 75, and young-
est, Quentin at 16, players. Trevor says the win was based on a “complete team effort”, although he concedes that the playing on their home course was a big advantage. Golden Downs last won the Sloan Trophy in 2005. “That was a huge help and we were lucky it was our turn to host the final. We always knew what club to use and the runs of the greens - now the big challenge will be defending the title.” Gary says the team played the final two rounds in playing-shirts sponsored by Nelson Pine Industries which he joked “made a change from the standard strip of Swandris and gumboots.”

After an entire year on the sidelines through injury ruined her chances last time, Charlotte Gordon faces another hurdle in her bid to play for the Mainland Pride football team. The Waimea College girls’ first XI captain has received an offer to play for the Mainland Pride team in the ASB National Women’s League — the premier football competition for women in New Zealand — but will be required to fly to Christchurch for pre-season training, and then every week before each game during the summer competition, if she accepts. But the major hurdle for the 18 year old student is the cost, and she’s hoping for some support from a business within the community. “The season starts in October and I’m expected to go down when the season starts every week and I’m expected to be there for pre-season, but it’s all de-

Netball’s top grades heat up for semis Saxton Stadium will host Nelson Netball semi-finals on Sunday. All grades, excluding Premier 1, will see 1 v 4 and 2 v 3, with the winners playing in the final the following Saturday. Premier 1 will play minor semi-finals with the first and second seeds playing off. The winner gets the direct route to the final while the loser plays the winner of the 3 v 4 semi. The two semis will see a repeat of last week’s final round robin game. Top seed Richmond (17 points) will meet defending champion Jacks OPD (14 points), while Stoke NBS (13 points) will do battle with Prices Pharmacy A (12 points). The slate has been wiped clean and while Jacks won the first and third round, there is definitely no favourite going into the game. It would be fair to say that Richmond have had the more consistent season, however results to date do not count for anything when it comes to semis. Last Thursday’s game was worthy of “final status”, as first Richmond and then Jacks dominated. There were ebbs and flows as both teams would get on a “mini roll”. Both teams created the turnover ball however the conversion rate was not high for either team. While there was no real standout play-

She and Nicky Rampton will have to increase their accuracy on Sunday as they actually had seven more attempts than Jacks last week. Coach Amanda Springer believes if her charges can stick to their game plan for
the entire game they “can do it” however she concedes it will be a tight game. Jacks, by their own admission, have played some “pretty average” netball this season. However, they know only too well what they have to do on Sunday. Jacks rely on their through court defence while their trump card is their ability to safely deliver the ball to the reliable goal shoot. Ani Waitai. While teams are used to playing in the evening it will be an adjustment to play at 9am on a Sunday. Stoke’s strength has been how the players have come together to play as a unit. Individually they are doing their job, and collectively they have achieved. The defence have toiled to win ball while the attacks have finished it off. Stoke will be looking at keeping their error rate down, and working on one quarter at a time. Prices coach, Mandy Whiting, has a full roster available on Sunday and says the onus is on the girls themselves. And, like Stoke, she believes a team effort and not an individual one will pay dividends on the day.

The Tasman District Council Consolidated Bylaw – Chapter 4 – Speed Limits Bylaw 2013 came into force on 23 July 2013. The Council has now resolved to undertake an amendment of the Chapter 4 of the Consolidated Bylaw. The draft amendments to Chapter 4 are now available for consultation in accordance with Sections 83 and 84 of the Local Government Act 2002. Chapter 4 of the Consolidated Bylaw sets out the speed limit for various local public roads (not State Highways) within the Tasman District. Only the NZ Police can enforce speed limits. The setting of speed limits is governed by the Land Transport Rule - Setting of Speed Limits 2003 and requires a number of factors to be considered when setting speed limits. The Council encourages you to have your say about the amendments to Chapter 4 of the Consolidated Bylaw. Please take the time to make a submission detailing your views and any changes you think would enhance it.
